Is it normal for me to suffer from depression and yet treat rain as a cure??

I am 16 years suffering from depression...

On meds that do no good....

The only thing that I consider close to happyness is feeling rain fall on my skin....

Is this normal behaviour???

Is it normal for me to suffer from depression and yet treat rain as a cure??
I think that it is normal. For you, that feeling may be that the rain is washing everything away, that your being cleansed. I love the feel of rain. I am clinically depressed myself but I believe that the meds do work....they aren't great and you dont feel great but you dont feel as horrible. I was on them, and then I took myself off because I thought they didn't work. After being off I felt better for a little while but then I went back to my old ways again. I was still depressed when I was on the meds but it felt better than how I still feel now.
Reply:i also suffer from depression and i also love the rain and most of all lightning storms they rock i have found that being outdoors like camping and such as much as i can helps the depression so the hardest is winter i can't do much cuz i hate snow but you behavior sounds normal to me try changing the lighting in your house also look for brighter bulbs this will help
Reply:No - but there's nothing wrong with rain. Clinical depression needs medical help - I know because I've been there. If your meds are not working- and they often take a long time to kick in- go back and see your doctor.Good luck.
Reply:I don't know about normal, but I've had the same thing. Also just being near water of any kind especially the ocean, but a lake or mountain stream will do. Somebody told me it's a spiritual thing but I don't know.

I think that water has a deep emotional satisfaction trigger for some people, kind of like the satisfaction of eating when your hungry. Water is the source of life as it were so it would make sense that deep in our animal brain there would be something to reward us for being near it.

Another reason that rain may have a calming effect is that, again on an animal level, if it's raining that means that the predators aren't out hunting so we're safe, the neighboring tribe won't attack so we're safe, and we can't do much work ourselves so we can just relax. Again it would make sense to me that our brains should have some primitive mechanism to tell us to chill out if it's raining.

The two little theories of mine that I mentioned above would both relate to stress caused depression more naturally I would think. Is your depression related to stress or fear in some way?

One last trick, I've stopped using the word depression with myself and started using the old word melancholy. It sounds much nicer to be melancholy than depressed, and if you think of it that way you can allow yourself to actually enjoy the mood and have fun with it;-%26gt; Try getting some blues music and maybe even a 'blues' outfit, an old hat or something and when you're feeling melancholy just allow yourself to. Enjoy it even. Who says it's bad to have the blues? Maybe put on your hat and dark glasses and write songs or poetry or go out to a blues club or have fun with it in some other way.

Good luck, I hope some of this was at least food for thought.

Reply:If I am let alone I'll sit in the shower for hours at a time, rain also. And yes I am also depressed,
Reply:Oh ja, that's normal.

I too love the rain.
